Today in class:

-- Please use Quizlet to study vocabulary for the first 15 minutes of class. No other activities or work may be done during this time.

-- Then, read through the questions near the end of this post before watching today's video.

-- Then, you will watch "Polysilicon Manufacturing Plant for Solar Cells, Semi Conductors," a video that explains how polysilicon is made.

-- Then, read "The Inside Story of the Great Polysilicon Heist" together as a class. You will take turns volunteering to read aloud.

-- Please take notes on the video and article.

-- Then, use the Internet to research polysilicon in the technology economy, and write short essay answers to the questions below. Answers must be in your own words, not copied directly from another source, and must be at least five complete sentences long. Answers which are copied directly from another source or do not meet the length requirement will be counted wrong. Please do your best and do not rush through this assignment.

1. How is polysilicon manufactured? 

2. In the article "The Inside Story of the Great Polysilicon Heist," who stole the material and how did they sell it?

3. Why were they able to steal so much without being caught before selling it?

4. In what industries is polysilicon used, and why has it become so valuable?

5. Do you believe polysilicon will become more or less valuable over the next 10 years? Explain your answer by giving three reasons why and supporting your ideas with facts.

-- Please turn in what you are able to complete today, and be prepared to discuss on Monday.

-- This will likely take the entire class period, but if you finish early, please rewrite your vocabulary terms and definitions until the end of the class period to study for Monday's test.

Tuesday, September 26, 2017 -- Creating a One Page Flyer

For today's assignment, please create the clothing flyer described below. A sample jewelry flyer follows below the instructions. 

If you finish the clothing flyer, please start the next assignment, which is creating a "Dream Vacation Flyer." Instructions, and an example follow below the jewelry flyer example.



Creating A Flyer
 By Using Clip Art, Photos, and Tables.

You will be making a Flyer over your favorite clothing brand. (Example: Under Armour, Hurley, Hollister, etc.…) This Flyer will need to advertise the brand, whether that is a new clothing item, a huge sale, or just trying to get people to like their clothes.

1.    Open a new Blank document, this document will be your flyer.

2.   Make sure you have these things on your flyer:
a.   Name of the brand, this needs to be in WordArt
b.   Text that explains what the flyer is advertising (Example: “Buy these new pair of shoes!”)
c.   At least 1 Clip Art
d.  At least 1 Table
e.   At least 1 Photo, this photo must be edited!

3.    Click on the “Page Layout” Tab à Click on the “Page Color” Button à Then change your page color to anything other than White.

4.   Click on the “Page Layout” Tab à Click on the “Page Border” Button à Then add a page border of your choice.

5.   Insert a header with your name, date, and class on it.

6.   When you are done, save your document. Be sure to include your first and last name

Instructions for Dream Vacation Flyer

You will be making your own brochure from scratch by using Microsoft Word. You will be using all the skills that you have learned over the past couple of weeks. This brochure will be over your dream vacation. All your information needs to be accurate information. Here are the requirements:

1.      You should have 2 document pages. One page will be the front of your brochure and one will be the back.
2.     Make your documents “Landscape”.
3.     Click on your “Page Layout” tab and change your “Page Setup” to 3 columns. Then click on the “Breaks” button and click on “Column”. Repeat this step 1 more time  (this will let you type in each column)

4.     Here is what should be on your brochure:

a.     At least 2 Pictures of your vacation destination
b.    Format one of your pictures.
c.     A WordArt with the name of your vacation destination
d.    A bulleted list of things you can do on the vacation.
e.     A Table with the cost of food, hotel, and activities (example: theme park, scuba diving, shopping, etc…)
f.       Insert a Text Box with the address and phone number of your vacation destination.
g.      2 Shapes. (Make sure the Shapes go well with your text)
h.    1 ClipArt. (Make sure the ClipArt go well with your text)
i.       Your Font needs to have some type of Formatting that is attractive.
j.       Description of what all you can do on the vacation.

Your Brochure needs to be organized and written in a professional manner. Also be sure to check your spelling. It will count against you if you spell words incorrectly. This needs to look like a professional publication.

1. Hyperlink
The blue, underlined text that takes you directly to a web site when you click on it.

2. Track changes
A word processor mode where every change is recorded and highlighted for later review. Both old and new text are kept in the document.

3. Mail Merge
A word processing function where a document template is combined with a database to produce a set of personalized documents.

4. Word Count
A word processing feature that counts the number of words and letters in a document. Useful for essays with a word limit.

5. Thesaurus
A word processing feature that can suggest words of similar meaning to the selected word.

6. Row
A horizontal set of cells in a table.

7. Column
A vertical set of cells in a table.

8. AutoFit
A word processing command to adjust the width of columns in a table so that they are just wide enough to display their contents.

9. Show Formatting
A command which displays whitespace characters, such as TAB, SPACE and ENTER, using special symbols.

10. Gutter
White space that separates columns and facing pages.

Please print and turn in the Tables and Clip Art assignments, if you have not already done so.  Once you have done that, please research the iPhone X and answer the questions posted with our research topic on our site. Please write your notes and answers to the questions on a separate piece piece of paper to use during our in-class discussion. Please turn them in at the end of the hour Thursday.

*The Vocabulary 5 test will be on Monday, due to school being out tomorrow. Please remember to use the Quizlet to study for the test.

Today in class:

- We are reviewing yesterday's videos covering how to use the Find and Replace and Outline View functions in Microsoft Word. I am also demonstrating an example of each on the screen at the front of the room. 

- Then, we are continuing our research and taking notes on Elon Musk's statement, "AI is the biggest risk we face as a civilization."

- Please apply what you have learned to put your notes in outline form by applying Styles, specifically by using the Heading 1, Heading 2, and Heading 3 styles. Then go to the View tab and switch to Outline View. Practice moving and reorganizing text by using the controls in Outline View. Use this to format your notes so that the information you have collected is easily accessible for our class discussion tomorrow.

Today, we are discussing our vocabulary words and finishing the Word assignment from yesterday. Please be sure to add your name in the header of your document, print it out on HP Laserjet 2300 in our classroom, and turn it in on top of our file box at the front of the room.

Then, please print your notebook cover assignment from earlier this year and place in the front cover of your notebook. After you finish this, please begin designing a second notebook cover for your white notebook.

Today we will have our test covering Vocabulary 1, Vocabulary 2, Vocabulary 3, and the PowerPoint presentation titled MS Word Basics. 

Then, we will begin working with Vocabulary 4 on Internet security. The Vocabulary 4 handout follows. When you have completed your test, please review the list and create a Microsoft Word document identical to the handout. We will cover the details of formatting in class discussion. When complete, please save it with the name vocab4apps2firstnamelastname, and turn in a printed copy.
